Twitter is set to revive its coveted blue check-mark next year after putting a three-year pause on the verification process.
The revamp is set for ‘early 2021,’ which will include a new public application process and guidelines for keeping the status that is given to accounts of public figures and organizations.
Although Twitter has not given details about the proposed rules, it has noted that verified accounts can lose their blue check mark for repeatedly violating the ‘Twitter Rules.'
The rules prohibit a number of actions including abusive and intimidating content, along with ‘false claims on how to participate in civic processes,’ all of which has been seen on President Donald Trump’s account.
Trump is currently protected by his ‘world leaders’ status, so any posts he has shared that break Twitters rules have been deemed as ‘newsworthy’ and users should be able to see such tweets.
Twitter has confirmed that at the inauguration on January 20, if Trump hands over the presidency to Joe Biden, he will also lose his ‘world leader' protection.
And if Trump continues down the same path he did as president, he could see the check mark removed – and even a potential ban from Twitter.
Twitter stopped handing out the blue check mark in 2017 after it came under scrutiny for verifying the account of a known white supremacist who organized racist rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia.
While Twitter argued that its verification process was meant to apply to accounts considered 'public interest,' the choice sparked a debate over whether those propagating hate speech should be allowed into the process.
The firm had continued to verify accounts since it discontinued individual requests, but only those firmly in the public eye - namely politicians and in recent times public health experts.
Now it seems others including accounts of sports players, journalists and other organizations could apply for the verification.
However, with great power comes great responsibility and Twitter is laying down the law this time for who is eligible.
While the social media firm pulls together its new guidelines, it is seeking out the public’s opinion about what policies should be added to the process.
And although the move may excite some users, others like Trump may feel the opposite.
Trump is no stranger to being flagged on Twitter and especially since moving into the White House.
Twitter slapped a red flag on a tweet he shared in May citing it ‘glorifies violence.’
Trump shared ‘when the looting starts, the shooting starts,’ which was hidden by a warning label because it violated Twitters rules.
