Correction is in order here:
The terminology was reversed by accident and I inadvertently gave the wrong description when I spoke of issues regarding bowing, which is a concave bend that makes the strings too high.

Bowing also makes it impossible to establish intonation and proper tuning. The opposite of bowing is a convex "hump"in the neck that renders the instrument unplayable, period.

Some bolted necks can be perfectly straight, but still have high action distances, even with a properly adjusted bridge. The remedy in most cases is to shim the bolt-on neck so that the neck is on as much of an even plane as the nut is.
