A Russian soldier killed an officer with an ax and then shot two more officers at a military base near Voronezh, southern Russia, the country's investigative committee said in a statement Monday.

"According to the investigation, on November 9, 2020, at 5:30 a.m. [the soldier] killed an officer using an ax in order to obtain a weapon and after that shot his colleagues, two of them died, one was wounded," the body said.

The military is searching for the fugitive - named as Private Anton Makarov - at the Baltimor airbase, the Investigative Committee (SK) says.

The soldier reportedly seized the officer's pistol, which he used to kill the other two, in the attack on Monday.

A fourth soldier was shot and wounded.

Makarov then went on the run with a pistol and ammunition.

An unnamed Interfax source said the shooting was sparked when an altercation broke out between the soldier and an officer during an inspection.

The suspected killer Anton Makarov was previously expelled from a police training college because of fights with fellow students, say reports.

Military service is compulsory in Russia for men aged between 18 and 27, but many people use loopholes to evade conscription.
