People in England now face £200 fine for leaving home without an excuse

People in England can be fined £200 for leaving their homes without a reasonable excuse from today as new coronavirus laws came into effect.

It means people will face fixed penalty notices and potentially a criminal record for being caught going away on holiday - as that's not a named excuse on the list.

New laws to enforce the month-long lockdown include the power for police to impose the penalties across the land.

Under the law, in force until December 2, no person may “leave or be outside” the place they are living without an excuse set out in law.

The place where you are living includes your home, garden, passages, stairways, garages and outhouses.

But it doesn’t include second homes or holiday homes, and the law has an exemption for people who are homeless. Protests are also not allowed.

Fines start at £200 but are reduced to £100 if paid within 14 days. Subsequent violations will see fines double to a maximum £6,400, with a possible conviction if unpaid.

While police have said they will try to persuade rule breakers to desist and use fines as a last resort, recent remarks from senior officers have indicated that Britons may see a return of draconian policing from the first lockdown.
