Red deer or real deer (lat.Cervus elaphus) is a cloven-hoofed mammal from the deer family. The red deer lives in most of Europe, the Caucasus, Asia Minor, Iran, and parts of Western and Central Asia. It also lives in the Atlas Mountains region between Morocco and Tunisia in northwest Africa, being the only deer species found in Africa. Red deer have been introduced to other areas including Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Peru, Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina. In many parts of the world, deer meat is used as food.
