Armed (Theology of Self Protection)

Can Christians use deadly force to defend themselves or the ones they love? Are arms (knives, guns, melee weapons) of any kind allowed for Christians to carry? Isn't it hypocritical to carry arms when G-d is our Protector? All we need to do is pray for G-ds protection and He will give it, right?
