Phoenix Critical Incident Briefing: Officer Involved Shooting, Stolen Vehicle

The Phoenix Police Department released a Critical Incident Briefing (CIB) video that includes audio, visuals and information related to an officer-involved shooting which occurred on September 21, 2020 at 6:22 a.m. The suspects in this incident are currently outstanding.

Phoenix Police Officers from the Desert Horizon Precinct were patrolling the area of 19th Avenue and Dunlap Avenue when they found a vehicle that had been reported stolen, with two people inside leaving the parking lot of a convenience store. Officers requested additional units and followed the vehicle to a motel near 21st Avenue and Dunlap Avenue.

Once a second two-person patrol unit arrived, the original driver and passenger officers moved to get out of the patrol car. At this time, the driver of the stolen vehicle drove into the passenger side of the patrol Tahoe, striking the door which then hit the officer. The passenger officer fired his service weapon at the driver.

The suspects and the vehicle were not struck during the officer-involved-shooting and left the area.

Other responding officers followed the suspect vehicle as it took off out of the parking lot heading west toward the I-17. The vehicle was last seen heading south on the freeway near Camelback.

The vehicle has since been recovered but the suspects remain outstanding. The suspect driver is described as a black male, between 20-25 years old, wearing a red bandana and a black shirt. If you have information regarding this incident, please call Silent Witness at (480) - WITNESS.

The involved officer is assigned to the Desert Horizon Precinct. He is 28 years old and has 2 years of service. He received minor injuries from this incident. There were no injuries to any community members.

Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete. An internal investigation by the Professional Standard Bureau is currently underway, in addition to a criminal investigation. Once the criminal investigation is complete it will then be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
