Wynberg. Cape Town. The Lux- A legacy building of great historical significance in Cape Town. Built by the late Ronnie Quibell in 1963 in Wynberg, the Luxurama was one of the first entertainment venues which accommodated mixed audiences in the 70 and 80’s during the heigh of Apartheid. It opened with the pantomime of Cinderella. Many international artists such as Percy Sledge and local Cape Town entertainers performed there.
Quibell, who had been regarded as an impresario of the performing arts industry, had fought against racially divided theatres. Video:Ian Landsberg/African News Agency (ANA) (ocg)
