South Africa - Cape Town - 11 February 2020 - Chrischene Julius, Acting director and head of the archives at D6 museum speaks. 2020 marks the 54th year since District Six was declared a White Group Area by the Apartheid state. Each year the District Six Museum leads a ritual procession to the memorial cairn situated on the last remaining piece of Hanover Street (now on Cape Peninsula University of Technology campus grounds). The cairn has been the focus of ongoing memorialisation practices by the District Six community since the 1990's. In returning to the cairn each year they remember the community of 60 000 District Sixers forcibly removed to the Cape Flats. Video: David Ritchie/African News Agency(ANA) (gXa)
