SOUTH AFRICA - Cape Town - Shark Exclusion Net on Fish Hoek Beach (Video) (Vqz)

SOUTH AFRICA - Cape Town - 12 March 2019 - A shark net, also known as an exclusion net is placed in the the ocean every morning during the summer season and retrieved and packed away every evening. A small team of ten manage the net on the beach and are on standby during the day in the event of a dolphin or whale gets too close to the net. In addition, shark spotters monitor the ocean from the mountain for sharks. At around 8am the team deploy the net with the help of a speed boat which takes the one end of the net to where it is anchored against a rock. The other end of the net is anchored on the beach. This creates a triangular space within which bathers can swim without fear of being attacked by a shark. At around 5 pm, the crew retrieve the net and pack it into a trailer for overnight storage.
