On Battle of Britain Day (15 September 1940) over 1500 planes fought in the skies above London and South East England.
Among the many acts of bravery that day, that of Flight Sergeant Raymond Holmes stands out...he encountered a flamethrower at 16 000ft, had a Nazi stuck on his wing, rammed a bomber and nearly died bailing out of his plane. He got some smooches though!
