More than 17 million Americans annually suffer from depression. The pandemic and economic downturn is taking the levels of depression in this country from bad to worse. According to a survey from the National Center for Health Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 30% of American adults report symptoms consistent with anxiety and/or depressive disorder. Yet, 49 percent of Wisconsin residents with a mental illness do not receive care, according to the Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This trial-and-error process is frustrating, time consuming and a waste of money for many patients. The GeneSight test may help doctors reduce the amount of time it takes to find a medication that alleviates depression symptoms by using a patient’s unique genetic makeup. We are joined by Carmen Kosicek a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, CEO and founder of Alay Health Team, Pewaukee to talk about the genetic testing that is leaving many with the answers they want, and the solutions they need.
