JUST one of two survivors from a plane crash, Kechi Okwuchi is used to overcoming adversity. The 30-year-old has gone on to appear on America’s Got Talent, where she wowed the judges with her beautiful voice and as a motivational speaker, sharing her story to motivate others that their scars - whether visible or invisible - don’t define them. When she was just 16, Kechi was flying back from boarding school for the Christmas holidays to Abuja, Nigeria with 60 of her fellow schoolmates. The Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 crashed and out of the 109 passengers on the plane, only two survived. Kechi was one of them. Suffering third-degree burns on 65% of her body, Kechi had extensive skin grafts taken from her back and torso - the part of her body that didn’t burn. Kechi and her family moved from Nigeria to the US for medical treatment and to date she has had 100-plus reconstructive surgeries. An unexpected result of the crash and her injuries was that Kechi discovered a new voice - while she could sing before, all of a sudden Kechi’s voice was getting everyone’s attention.
Her best friend entered Kechi into America’s Got Talent and since then Kechi has started writing her own music as well as motivational speaking.
