Wild Peacocks roam neighbourhood in British Columbia

Peacocks took over a South Surrey neighbourhood in British Columbia, Canada. One of the local residents had the joy, or not, of having numerous families of Peafowl take up residence in one of his large trees within his yard. During 2018, the City of Surrey began trapping and relocating many of the birds as residents had been complaining about the noise, and mess these birds were making. After relocating 17 of the large peafowl aka Peacocks, there were still approximately 12 of the beautiful large birds remaining in the neighbourhood. After numerous efforts to have all of the birds removed from his property, the homeowner then took it upon himself to have the tree felled. Without permits, the home owner was breaking a number of city bylaws, which did not get forgotten about. Penalties were imposed, but that still did not solve the issue at hand. Even one year after the initial problems, there were a small number of the birds living within the neighbourhood. In this video you can see that these birds are quite larger and are free roaming. Climbing all over home owners houses, fences etc, they are also damaging grassy lawns. The male birds are knows as peacocks, where as the females are known as peafowl or peahens. Having a lifespan between 10 and 25 years and to around 10 to 12 pounds. Along with the issue of property damage and mess made by these birds living in such a large number in this neighbourhood, another issue that residents were not happy with was the number of drivers that cruised the area looking out for the peacocks. Paying more attention to the birds than their driving, this was becoming a hazard with the number of children in the area. Beautiful or not, this was a very hazardous situation that took more than 2 years to deal with. One thing for sure, “it was interesting seeing these birds up close” the videographer mentioned. Trying to record some very close video footage, it proved that these birds were not tame, one immediately made an effort to move away from the videographer. Up up and away went the one peacock perched on the fence to a safer location in its mind.
