Illinois joins New York, California is ordering residents to stay home
Illinois late Friday afternoon became the third U.S. state in which residents have been ordered to stay at home to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
The order by Gov. J.B. Pritzker follows a similar one by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo earlier in the day and one Thursday night by California Gavin Newsom.
The orders, which require residents to stay indoors unless they have a vital reason to leave, will impact roughly 70 million Americans.
Cuomo announced that starting Sunday night all workers in non-essential businesses across New York must stay home, in an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
"On the businesses on the valve, we reduced it to 50% of the workforce. We then reduced it to 75% of the workforce must stay home and today we're bringing it to 100% of the workforce must stay home," Cuomo said.
He said that essential workers – including those who work in grocery stores or for utility companies and internet service providers – will still be needed. Public transport also will remain in operation.
