Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a new executive order on Wednesday directing all New Yorkers to wear masks or face coverings while in public.
"If you're going to be in public, and you cannot maintain social distancing, then have a mask. And put the mask on when you're not in socially distanced places," he said during a press conference. "You're walking down the street alone, great. You're now at an intersection and there are people in the intersection and you're going to be in proximity to other people, put the mask on."
Cuomo said he will give people a three-day notice period to comply with the new rule, which applies in situations where people are unable to fully comply with social-distancing rules, such as on a subway platform or busy street.
While the outbreak appears to be leveling off, Cuomo said there are roughly 2,000 new cases confirmed in the state every day.
