The Story Behind the Famous Pickle and Peanut Butter Sandwich
You don't have to be pregnant to enjoy a pickle and peanut butter sandwich. Created during the Great Depression as an unusual pantry sandwich, the pickle and peanut butter sandwich was produced out of necessity. Since then, the PB&P was was a quiet recipe that people would make in the middle of the night for a snack. That is until 2017 when Dwight Garner of The New York Times shared his love of the depression era pickle sandwich in his De Gustibus column. The article brought a whole new life to the sandwich and turned the internet upside down. It influenced every food website and foodie to question if pickles and peanut butter were meant to live together harmoniously in between white bread, myself included.
How to Make a Perfect Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwich
While this sandwich recipe is simple, it does require a little bit of thought. Dill pickles or butter pickles? White bread or slices of wheat bread? Crunchy peanut butter or creamy peanut butter? These are all up to the consumer. Personally I like kosher dill pickles with creamy peanut butter on white bread. The savory and sweet combo on two slices of bread is much better than the traditional PB&J.
