It was initially assumed that the polar bear separated from the brown one about 45-150 thousand years ago, probably in the territory of modern Ireland [4] [5]. However, a recent study [6] showed that the polar bear separated from their common ancestor with the brown bear 338–934 thousand years ago (an average of 600 thousand years ago), and 100–120 thousand years ago as a result of cross-breeding of species, they hybridized. as a result, all modern polar bears are descendants of these hybrids.

Mating of polar and brown bears took place over a long period, as a result of which 2% (in some populations, from 5 to 10%) of the polar bears' genetic material are found in the brown bear population.
