I don't think most politicians today even understand what their role is - not just in America, but all over the world. The role of government - any government - is to take care of the "common business" of The People. Those people being the LEGAL residents of that jurisdiction. Further, it is the duty of government to protect the rights of those same LEGAL residents of that jurisdiction.

Common business being the "common" tasks the residents want performed. Rather than each individual or household building their own roads; hiring their own "police force"; hiring their own firefighters; etc., they have their government perform those tasks on behalf of the collective people. Their role IS NOT to "rule" The People and dictate to them how they will live their lives.
