Husband discovers gigantic spider in wife's raspberry patch

Dave is relatively fearless and doesn't shy away from most creatures, but he has one weakness. He is nervous about large spiders. When Kristy asked him to pick berries so she could make a raspberry cake, he happily agreed and got right to work. But almost immediately, he saw something that terrified and fascinated him at the same time. There was a big black and yellow garden spider with a web that stretched across a gap in the raspberry canes. It had some sort of a meal wrapped up in its web.

Dave's reaction was completely understandable. He stopped working and got out his camera. He also told Kristy he was on a labor strike because things in her garden were much too dangerous. As he filmed the "monster", Kristy came over for a closer look. Exaggerating his fear of this giant beast, Dave bantered with Kristy about this thing being in her garden. Kristy has no fear of spiders and she teased Dave relentlessly, telling him that there could be hundreds of babies and that she probably ate her mate. Dave jokes around that the insect in the web is a chicken drumstick or a wild turkey and he warns Kristy that the spider might be responsible if children go missing in the neighborhood.

The truth is that Dave knows these spiders play a valuable role in the balance of nature and that they are beneficial creatures in a vegetable garden.

This spider is about the size of a small walnut and its legs stretch out almost 15cm (6 inches). As beautiful as they are, these large spiders are very intimidating for many people.

Dave isn't too keen on the fact that this spider is as welcome in the garden as a family pet would be and he tells Kristy that he would rather she get a puppy. This has been a debate for many months, with Kristy being very eager for another dog. Dave has been harder to convince, so when Kristy hears this comment, she seizes the opportunity and tells Dave that he has now agreed to getting a puppy.

Dave may have his hands full now!
