Fish spas are one of the latest crazes and they are sweeping tourist destinations such as Mexico. For a small fee, clients can sit and relax while they immerse their feet in swirling water that contains a few dozen little fish that will nibble away at dead skin and callouses. The fish that are used in fish pedicures are Garra rufa, a tiny breed of carp that are native to rivers and ponds in West Asia. They are commonly referred to as doctor fish, or nibble fish and they have been used for this kind of service for almost a decade.

Prior to immersing their feet, clients are treated to a scrubbing and sanitizing procedure that removes anything that can harm the fish or contaminate the water. The feet are then dunked in the tank and the fish immediately begin nibbling away at unwanted skin. The water is circulated through a filter and ultraviolet light is used to sterilize the water in order to reduce the risk of contaminates or bacteria. These spas have been used for many decades for the treatment of psoriasis and it is well documented that their use alleviates the symptoms, although these spas do not present a cure.

Widely debated due to reports of infections and transmission of bacteria, these spas are actually believed to be completely safe if the water is treated and filtered properly.
