“If it fits, I sits.”

It is well known among all cats that if you are big enough to fit into a box, it is your moral and feline obligation to sit in that box. Even if your top half is sticking out like a blobby muffin, you simply must get into that box. And that’s exactly what this adorable orange and black-spotted cat just had to do. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t take into consideration their ability to balance, and quickly fell off of the couch and onto the floor.

I feel you, cat. I really do. There is just nothing worse than when I see myself a nice pink box just big enough for my butt, climb into said box and situate myself until I’m comfortable, just for it all to fall apart. But hey, you’re still a winner. You fit into that box and that is all that matters.

If you’ve ever wondered why cats like this little fella sit in boxes, you may be surprised. Despite how silly these kittens look while attempting this kind of stunt, it actually all relates back to a cat’s deep-rooted hunting instincts. According to experts, cats are instinctually driven to locate a good hiding spot. Back when your feline friend’s ancestors used to hunt for food in the wild, the best way to ambush pray and simultaneously hide from a predator came in the form of a deep hole in the ground or a secluded spot hidden behind some bushes. When our cats see an innocent little box sitting empty somewhere around the house, they feel a deep, genetic calling to fill that space.

But it’s clear that not all modern-day house cats are that connected with their ancestral background. Take the orange and black-spotted cat, for instance. Sure, they’re just about the cutest thing in the world. But can you imagine this cat hunting for pray? That’s not to say that any mouse stumbling upon their path wouldn’t be in for a rude awakening. But let’s put it this way: it’s a good thing that this guy probably eats Fancy Feast for dinner every night.

Still, cats are just the best. And even the biggest and mightiest of felines, like lions or tigers, will still gladly sit in a box if presented with one big enough to contain them. I myself can’t resist the enticing call of an empty box just waiting to be sat in.
