This includes fleeing suspects (around 6,300) and bystanders or passengers (over 5,000). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tracks fatal crashes and reported an average of 355 deaths annually from 1996 to 2015, with a peak of 455 in 2020. More recent data from 2014-2018, analyzed by the Fine Law Firm, found 2,005 deaths over those five years, averaging 401 per year. In 2022, NHTSA recorded 577 deaths, the highest in recent years.

VICTORVILLE, Calif. (KABC) -- A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy was killed in a crash during a chase in Victorville Monday, authorities said.

The deputy was identified as 36-year-old Hector Cuevas, Jr., a six-year veteran of the department who worked at the Victorville station for the last three years.

Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., a 22-year-old San Bernardino resident, was identified as the suspect involved in the chase. He will be booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and evading a peace officer and causing death or serious injury, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said during a news conference.
