I am finding traditional butterfly can openers increasingly hard to manage and the stabber type is just an accident waiting to happen. So I looked around for an electric one. This one caught my eye due to the price, attractive design and features on offer. When it arrived I was not too disappointed, it looked nice, not so good as in the photos but nice enough for the £18 price (now raised to £21.24).

In the box, I received the can opener itself, the removable blade assembly and a large but poorly printed user guide (a more detailed full colour guide can be downloaded from the Duronic website).

At just 600g the device does feel rather lightweight if not flimsy and the build quality although OK is far from premium. The shiny front panel may well be stainless steel - although possibly some sort of plastic - and it comes with a hard wired 94cm power cable with a UK plug attached. A nice touch is the storage bay in the rear of the can opener for any excess cable.

The blade assembly, metal with a plastic covering, clicks easily into place at the top of the can opener. Then plug in and you should be ready to go.

That is the end of the good news.

I struggled for ages to get the blade to engage properly with the top of the can and when it finally did the 50w motor struggled to open and rotate a standard can of baked beans. I doubt very much if it could cope with a large or heavier tin.

I did not test the bottle opener or blade sharpener, but they seem well designed and I have no reason to doubt that they will work as well as can be expected.

I decided to send it back and replace it with a more powerful model - I have seen plenty of similarly designed units with motors of 70w or more. Hopefully the next one will have a better alignment mechanism for the blade and can and feel more robust.
