Underberg is a small administrative town located in the Mzimkulu River valley of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, nestled at the foothills of the southern Drakensberg Mountains beneath the 1,904-meter Hlogoma Peak. Established in 1917 when the railway from Pietermaritzburg reached the area, it serves as a key commercial hub for the surrounding dairy and cattle farming community, offering essential support services. The town also acts as a trading center for those traveling via the nearby Sani Pass from Lesotho.

Known for its stunning natural beauty, Underberg is a gateway to the Southern Drakensberg and a thriving tourist destination. It is one of South Africa’s premier trout fly-fishing spots, alongside Dullstroom, Mpumalanga, and attracts visitors with activities like hiking, mountain biking, and the famous Sani Pass 4x4 route, which leads to the highest pub in Africa. The town hosts notable annual events such as the Splashy Fen music festival, the Sani2C Mountain Bike Race, and the Drak Challenge canoe marathon, boosting its appeal.
