Did Christians Stop Performing Miracles?

Throughout history, skeptics and seekers alike have asked, “If miracles were so common in the early church, why don’t we see them today?” It’s a fair question—one that deserves a clear, biblical answer. Recently, someone posed this exact question, asking when and why Christians stopped performing miracles like casting out demons and healing the sick.
At first glance, it might seem like an odd thing to ask. After all, the New Testament records extraordinary miracles—Jesus healed the blind, the apostles cast out demons, and Peter’s very shadow brought healing to the sick (Acts 5:15). Yet today, we don’t see those same kinds of miraculous events happening in the church. Did something change? The short answer is yes—but not because God’s power has diminished. Rather, Scripture teaches that certain types of miracles, called sign gifts, had a specific purpose and were meant to cease once that purpose was fulfilled.
