The First Crusade – one of the most unlikely success stories in history. A motley army of warrior pilgrims traveled thousands of miles from western Europe to the Holy Land, where they battled some of the most formidable eastern powers of the period. The crusaders won, but then, most of the crusaders went home. Left behind were the few knights, adventurers, priests and pilgrims intent on fighting for survival in these distant lands. It was an age of warrior kings, of battles to the death against impossible odds. The Kingdom of Jerusalem, led by Baldwin I, and the Principality of Antioch, led by the Norman Tancred, were only beginning to take shape. How did the remaining pilgrims survive? How did the newly emerging Crusader States endure? How did the neighboring Muslim rulers and peoples react to the presence of these new kingdoms? Today, on Real Crusades History, we’ll follow the exhilarating early history of the Crusader States, and answer the question: what happened after the First Crusade?
