EJ Antoni: Reviving tariffs could bring income tax to an end

EJ Antoni, Public Finance Economist at the Heritage Foundation, says it’s possible to reduce government spending by replacing income tax revenue with tariff revenue. “Before we had an income tax, tariffs were actually how the government financed itself,” Antoni explains. “In fact, the income tax had been ruled unconstitutional. We had to change the Constitution in 1913 in order to implement it.”
