"Hooked On A Feeling," written by Mark James, was B. J. Thomas' 5th top 40 hit landing at the no. 5 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968/1969 (Whitburn, 2013). The Swedish group Blue Swede took the song to no. 1 in 1974; it was the band's first entry onto the Billboard chart (Whitburn, 2013). According to songfacts, "Drug references were big in 1968, and this song has plenty of them, but the context is love as a drug; Thomas is 'high on believin'' and will 'just stay addicted' to the girl who can "turn me on." All very innocent" (songfacts, 2025). Blue Swede's version was a take on Jonathan King's rendition, who used the 'Oooonga Chacka' chant on his release in 1971(C. Walthall, americansongwriter, May 5, 2022). King's version, though not released in the USA, rose to no. 23 in England (E. Osborne, top40weekly, 2025).
