Keven Hofeling:
"[00:00] Bill Newman recalls a potentially controversial memory about President Kennedy's assassination, specifically describing a momentary stop of the presidential limousine.

[00:03] Newman describes seeing the car's tail lights and a sudden braking motion, indicating a brief pause during the shooting in Dealey Plaza.

[00:48] He specifically notes a Secret Service agent on the passenger side who appeared to be using a communication device (possibly a two-way radio or telephone) during this moment.

[01:33] Newman emphasizes that when he says the car stopped, he means an extremely brief moment - not a prolonged pause - after which the car "shot out" under the Triple Underpass.

[02:17] He also recalls seeing Secret Service agents with what he describes as "sharp rifles" similar to a Thompson submachine gun, who seemed to move up the grassy area behind him.

[02:52] Newman is careful to qualify his statements, repeatedly stressing that he is not trying to "create anything."

[02:52] The video ends with another person (Stephen of the Sixth Floor Museum) acknowledging the complexity and variability of eyewitness testimony, referring to the "magic and frustration" of such accounts.
__________
1. Dealey Plaza witness Bill Newman describes a recollection of an event involving President Kennedy. Newman believes that the car momentarily stopped, an action he associates with sudden braking. A Secret Service agent, seemingly using a two-way radio, is also noted in the passenger seat. After SS Agent Clint Hill entered the car and pushed Mrs. Kennedy back, the car sped off.

2. Newman finds the car's movement confusing when reviewing Zapruder film footage, as the footage seems to show continuous speed, suggesting their memory of a stop might be inaccurate. Newman clarifies the stop was very brief, and that he understands the potential contradiction between his statement and the film evidence. Newman stresses his recollection is genuine and persistent despite potential discrepancies.

3. Newman recalls seeing Secret Service agents, seemingly behind the car, open the convertible top and produce what he believes were rifles, similar to Thompson submachine guns. Some of these men appeared to be heading towards the grassy knoll. Newman states this memory has been consistent since the initial recounting of the event.

4. The concluding statement of the Sixth Floor Museum curator indicates that the conversation will continue and compares Newman's account to other witnesses' recollections, acknowledging the inherent variability and challenges in relying solely on eyewitness testimony.

The 2016 JFK Lancer “November in Dallas” conference was held at the Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas, November 18-20, 2016. This session, “A Conversation with Bill and Gayle Newman,” marks the first time that The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza has participated in the annual JFK Lancer conference. Curator Stephen Fagin moderated a discussion with Bill and Gayle Newman, the closest civilian eyewitnesses to President Kennedy at the moment of the fatal shot. Standing on the north side of Elm Street, the Newmans fell to the ground and shielded their two young children."
