The Conversation follows Harry Caul (Gene Hackman), a skilled private surveillance expert. He is tasked by a shadowy client, known to him as "the Director" (Robert Duvall), with the difficult job of recording the conversation of a couple walking around the bustling Union Square in San Francisco, meticulously taping what he suspects is an affair.
Harry Caul is intensely private, obsessively guarding his own personal life, haunted by guilt from a past assignment that resulted in three deaths in New York.
Despite Caul's insistence that he is not responsible for how his clients use the surveillance, he is troubled by guilt and his Catholic faith. When he discovers a potentially dangerous phrase in the recording, "He'd kill us if he got the chance," Caul becomes increasingly paranoid. His attempt to deliver the recording is thwarted, and he believes he is being followed and tricked.
A Covenant with Death:
Within a small American town on the Mexican border in 1923, a promiscuous, married woman is found dead in her bedroom. Her grieving, jealous and widely disliked husband Bryan Talbot is convicted of her murder and sentenced to hang on purely circumstantial evidence despite his fierce denials. The presiding judge, Hochstadter, departs for a fishing trip, leaving it to the inexperienced Mexican American judge Ben Morealis Lewis to oversee the execution. Lewis has misgivings about mandatory sentencing and capital punishment in general, as well as about Talbot's guilt. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Covenant_with_Death#
