Mérida is the state capital. Walking through its streets, you can feel its romantic provincial atmosphere, a testament to a past rich in history and legends. Despite having modern touches, Mérida has managed to preserve its colonial flavor, full of light and color in every corner. At night, Mérida transforms to delight its visitors: stroll through the historic center in a horse-drawn carriage, sit on the terrace of an outdoor café to contemplate the starry nights, enjoy a show where mestizas and troubadours present folklore and romance in evenings filled with music and poetry.

At one time, it was known as the hermitage of Our Lady of Good Voyage, due to its location on the side of the royal road. It was named Santa Isabel, in honor of the mother of Saint John the Baptist. The exact date of its founding is unknown, although the inscription "A devoción del yll.mo (verbvmcar ofactvm est)" (To the devotion of the holy saint) was engraved in the year 1748.

However, it is known that it was built by Gaspar González de Ledezma (17th century), with the belief that building a church was more valuable than piety and devotion to a saint to gain entry to heaven.
