White House withdraws CDC director nominee scrutinized for vaccine stance

Dr. Dave Weldon’s nomination to be director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was abruptly revoked by the White House Thursday morning, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

The withdrawal happened just before Weldon was supposed to appear for a confirmation hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.Weldon, an internal medicine physician and former member of Congress, had come under intense scrutiny for his anti-vaccine record and his staunch anti-abortion positions.

While in Congress, Weldon co-sponsored a bill that would have banned mercury from vaccines. In 2007, Weldon wrote in a statement for a different bill he sponsored that there are “legitimate questions” regarding the connection between the mercury-based preservative thimerosal and childhood neurodevelopmental disorders.

Weldon holds many of the same positions on vaccine safety as Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who almost did not succeed in his confirmation process due to his long history of vaccine skepticism. Kennedy and Weldon have reportedly maintained a relationship for about 25 years.

Weldon also spearheaded the Weldon Amendment, a provision in a 2004 appropriations bill that prohibits health agencies from discriminating against hospitals or health insurance plans that do not provide or pay for abortion services.

This question shows that you're interested in long-term development and leaves room for an open, positive answer.

Health benefits are great, and in fact, many companies today offer them or similar benefits. But there are smarter ways to ask about them.

✅ "I read something about health programs on the company website. Can you tell me more about them?"

This shows that you've already researched the company and are interested in how it cares for its employees.

Yes, sometimes interviewers seem a bit over-enthusiastic, and you become suspicious as to whether such enthusiasm for the company and the job is realistic. But that's no reason to forget all manners. Instead, ask:

✅ "I'm interested in knowing what you enjoy most about your job and why?"

This shows genuine interest in how the work environment influences employee engagement and satisfaction.

Even though bureaucratic processes can be nerve-wracking, this wording is too negative and could give the impression that you generally have difficulty fitting into established systems.

✅ "How is the company organized? What structures do they use?"

This question seems neutral and gives you a good impression of the internal processes without any negative connotations.

This is also an important point that may be highly relevant to you at some point. So, if you want to find out how family-friendly the company is, try this:

✅ "I read that the company is family-oriented. Can you tell me more about that?"

This question lets you find out how the company views work-life balance without getting too personal.
