The Great Poisoning Is Bankrupting America with Dr. Mark Skidmore

This week, economist and long-time Solari ally Dr. Mark Skidmore returns to the Solari Report to tell us about his latest research, which highlights the impact of a dramatic increase in disability in the U.S. since 2010, with corresponding federal budgetary implications amounting to half a trillion dollars a year. Professor Skidmore holds the Morris Chair in State and Local Government Finance and Policy at Michigan State University and was our 2017 Hero of the Year for his landmark report documenting the financial coup d’état and missing $21 trillion.

Dr. Skidmore’s December 2024 study, “State-by-State Analysis of Federal Government Transfers Net of Taxes Paid” in the Journal of Regional Analysis & Policy focuses on the federal balance of payments—defined as federal expenditures to the states net of federal tax revenues paid from the states. His research shows that in addition to military spending, a primary determinant of the balance of payments is the proportion of the population that is disabled (as well as the proportions living in poverty or who are elderly). This is because greater disability leads to more social safety net spending but less federal income tax contributions.
