Over HALF of Columba University's enrollment is now foreign students: Who’s Paying the Bill?
Columbia University has reached a troubling milestone: more than half of its enrolled students are now foreign nationals. This shift not only alters the composition of the student body but also raises serious questions about funding and the broader impact of immigration on American higher education.
One of the most alarming aspects of this situation is that these international students pay full tuition, giving universities a financial incentive to prioritize their admission over American students. Meanwhile, U.S. taxpayers have seen $400 million in federal grants pulled, according to a Free Press report. This raises a key question: why are American citizens funding a university system that increasingly benefits foreign students rather than their own youth?
This issue also ties into a broader debate about immigration and cultural exchange. As universities like Columbia become dominated by international students, national identity weakens, and American students find it harder to access higher education due to increased competition and rising costs.
This trend is not isolated. Just this Monday, Harvard announced a hiring freeze, signaling that educational institutions are facing a financial crisis fueled by their own admissions and funding policies. Interestingly, many of the revoked federal grants were allocated to hard sciences, while faculty members supporting campus protests and anti-Israel BDS resolutions are unlikely to be the most affected by Trump’s funding cuts.
This could lead to a deeper divide within academia. On one side are serious researchers who simply want to do their work without being dragged into political conflicts. On the other are activists who view universities as ideological battlegrounds and are willing to fight to the bitter end. The shift in funding and the emphasis on foreign students could escalate this internal war, pitting radicalized academics against those striving to maintain the integrity of education.
Meanwhile, American students—who should be the priority in their own country’s universities—are losing out. Institutions like Columbia no longer reflect national academic excellence but instead function as revenue-driven enterprises that prioritize those who can pay the most, regardless of the consequences for American society.
