I went to Israel in late 2002 into 2003 and felt TENSE the whole time I was there checking out all the ancient sites. No buses from the Jordan border & I had to take SHERUTS (Taxis with 5 passengers at a time), CHECK POINTS EVERYWHERE with IDF always harrassing the Palestinians, bombs going off in various places (My bus depot in Tel Aviv was blown up killing many people only 3 hours after I left to go to Eilat in early January 2003). Even at the Wailing Wall in old city Jerusalem with young Israeli women walking about with rifles strapped to their backs. It really felt like a POLICE STATE even back then 22 years ago!
