Trump to Buy Tesla in a Bold Show of Support for Elon Musk Amid Protests
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he plans to purchase a brand-new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk—a man he hailed as "a truly great American." Speaking on Truth Social shortly after midnight, Trump claimed the decision was meant to counter what he described as an illegal boycott led by "Radical Left Lunatics" targeting the electric automaker.
Trump, who has been a vocal supporter of Musk, described Tesla as one of the world’s great automakers and referred to it as Musk’s "baby." "To Republicans, Conservatives, and all great Americans, Elon Musk is putting it on the line in order to help our Nation, and he is doing a FANTASTIC JOB!" Trump wrote. He continued, "But the Radical Left Lunatics, as they often do, are trying to illegally and collusively boycott Tesla in order to attack and do harm to Elon, and everything he stands for. They tried to do it to me at the 2024 Presidential Ballot Box, but how did that work out?"
Explaining his planned purchase further, Trump stated, "In any event, I’m going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk, a truly great American. Why should he be punished for putting his tremendous skills to work in order to help MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN???" The announcement was met with an enthusiastic response from Musk, who replied on X (formerly Twitter): "Thank you, President @realDonaldTrump!"
The decision comes as Tesla faces nationwide protests. In recent weeks, Tesla car owners, dealerships, and charging stations have been targeted by demonstrators over Musk's involvement with the Trump administration’s newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Protesters rallied outside Tesla dealerships on Saturday, waving signs that denounce both Musk and DOGE, and incidents of vandalism have been reported. Last week, an Oregon Tesla dealership suffered gunshot damage to cars and windows, and in Salem, Oregon, a man was arrested after Molotov cocktails were thrown at a dealership.
As tensions continue to rise on both sides, Trump’s statement appears aimed not only at bolstering Musk’s public image but also at reinforcing support among his political base. The move underscores the deep divisions in public opinion over Tesla’s role in American industry and politics, with supporters seeing the automaker as a symbol of American ingenuity and detractors questioning its practices and affiliations.
