The Earth According to the Bible: A Different Story Than What We Learned in School

From childhood, we are taught a specific view of the Earth—one shaped by modern science, geography, and astronomy. However, when we turn to the Bible, we find descriptions of the Earth that differ significantly from what we have been taught in school. These scriptures present a worldview that challenges conventional teachings about the planet, the heavens, and creation itself.

In this article, we will explore key biblical passages that reveal a perspective on the Earth that is rarely discussed in educational settings.

1. The Earth Is Fixed and Unmovable

Modern science teaches that the Earth rotates on its axis and orbits the sun at incredible speeds. However, the Bible describes the Earth as stationary.
• 1 Chronicles 16:30 – “Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.”
• Psalm 104:5 – “He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.”

These verses suggest a firm and unshakable Earth, which is vastly different from the heliocentric model taught in schools.

2. The Earth Has a Firmament (Dome) Over It

The common scientific view is that space is an endless vacuum, but the Bible describes a solid expanse separating the waters above from the Earth.
• Genesis 1:6-8 – “And God said, ‘Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.’ So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault ‘sky.’”

This “firmament” (Hebrew: raqia) implies a tangible structure, contrasting with the idea of an open atmosphere leading to outer space.

3. The Sun and Moon Move Over the Earth

Instead of the Earth orbiting the sun, the Bible describes the sun and moon as moving across the sky.
• Joshua 10:12-13 – “Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.’ So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies.”

For the sun to stand still, it implies that it was the sun moving in the first place—not the Earth.

4. The Earth Has Ends and Corners

Schools teach that the Earth is a globe, yet the Bible speaks of “ends” and “corners,” which imply a different shape.
• Isaiah 11:12 – “He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four corners of the earth.”
• Job 38:13 – “That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?”

These descriptions raise questions about the shape of the Earth in biblical cosmology compared to the accepted scientific model.

5. The Waters Above and Below the Earth

According to modern science, water exists in oceans, lakes, rivers, and underground reservoirs. However, the Bible speaks of waters both above and below the Earth.
• Genesis 7:11 – “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.”

This suggests a system where water exists beyond what we observe today, supporting the idea of the firmament above and a vast subterranean water system below.
