Reinventing the Deck(Part 1) : The 1968 Magnum 35' Sport Restoration Series - Episode 11

Dive into Episode 11 of our Restoration Series as we tackle a crucial phase in rejuvenating the classic 1968 Magnum 35' Sport - restoring its deck. After stripping the vessel of all its electrical and mechanical components, we were met with the challenge of a deck that had grown brittle over its 50+ years.

To preserve its structure during restoration, we constructed an external framework, equipped with wheels for easy maneuverability. Flipping the deck upside down, we meticulously removed the old laminate and the deteriorated balsa and plywood core, leaving behind only the shell. It was evident that the original non-marine plywood had not stood the test of time.

Embracing the boat's original building philosophy, we relaminated the deck, introducing a new foam core and, in critical areas, a wood core to ensure the necessary rigidity for mounting hardware and structural integrity where the deck interfaces with other parts of the boat.

The restoration journey continued with the application of four coats of Allgrip 545 primer on the underside, each layer sanded down to perfection, preparing the deck for its final color paint and clear coat.
