Sustained low-efficiency dialysis is a form of hemodialysis done in the ICU setting. Patients in the ICU admitted for different reasons may experience a decline in kidney function. This is called acute kidney injury.

Causes of acute kidney injury
• Inability to pass urine
• Increase of acid levels in the body
• Increased urea levels in the body
• Increased potassium levels

While the patient is suffering from kidney problems or multi-organ failure, this method can help perform the functions of the kidney externally.

Usually, kidney doctors perform dialysis for outpatients for 4 hours but this procedure is done over 6 hours for the ICU patients.

Watch Dr. Balaji Kirushnan of Kauvery Hospital, one of the best Nephrologists in Alwarpet, Chennai explain what Sustained Low-Efficiency Dialysis (SLED) is and how it benefits patients with acute kidney injury.
