Rahan.

The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Fifty-Nine.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Romero.

The Justice of the Clan.

The son of Crao heard the rustling of the leaves and saw the chimpanzee, which, subtly, was about to seize his ivory knife.
No way, "Four-Hands"!
His knife and collar are Rahan's only possessions!
You will not "Steal" them!

Greek!
The chimpanzee abandoned the ivory weapon, but.

Oh!
The thin vine of the necklace had just broken!

Rahan will catch up with you sooner or later, "Four-Hands"!
Rahan was almost as agile as a monkey!
An extraordinary chase began in the foliage.

Page Two.

Not far from there, admiring hunters followed the acrobatic movements of the son of Crao.
The fire-haired hunter is as fast as "Toya"!

This clan leader hated that his prestige was being damaged!
But he is probably less agile than "Freuk"!
Capture him and "Freuk" will prove it to you!

Rahan will never find his necklace again!
Will Crao forgive him for letting it be stolen?
However, Rahan had just lost sight of the chimpanzee.

Rahan thought of the "Tragic Night" of his childhood.
To Crao bequeathing to him, before dying, the necklace of the brave.
Each claw symbolizes a virtue.
Courage, loyalty, tenacity, generosity, wisdom!

The child, now an adult, had never betrayed the oath made to Crao.
Rahan will always defend your virtues.
He swears to you, Crao!

Page Three.

Courage, loyalty, tenacity, generosity, wisdom!
The five-pronged necklace had long been his only possession.

Until that famous night when he stole the ivory knife from the chief of the river clan.

And Rahan had never again parted with either the necklace or the knife.
But this time Rahan has very little chance of getting his necklace back!

He knew from experience that the "Four-Hands" never stray too far from their territory.
But the forest is too thick!
And night will soon fall!

He thought he heard the familiar "Greek-Greek" of the "Four-Hands"
Oh!
Would Rahan be so lucky!?

Page Four.

The wind was contrary, and the son of Crao never knew that he had passed within ten paces of the monkey hidden in the foliage.

The sun was now setting the horizon ablaze.
Rahan will never find his necklace again!
He asks you for forgiveness, Crao!

Night found the son of Crao exhausted by his vain searches, distraught by his failure.
Tomorrow, Rahan will search at dawn, he must sleep to regain his strength!

Too tormented by the loss of his claw necklace, Rahan was plagued by nightmares.
The "Four-Hands" threw the necklace into a bottomless pit.

And as he himself dove to catch his necklace, it vanished into smoke the moment he seized it.

Page Five.

Or he found himself surrounded by a people of "Four-Hands" who all taunted him by brandishing necklaces of claws.

And when he rushed to recover his property, these necklaces suddenly transformed into so many projectiles.

And when he managed to grab one of these necklaces, the claws would melt like ice cubes in the bright sun!

Oh!
Greek! Greek!
He still thought he was dreaming when cries of "Four hands" broke out not far from him.

What have you done with the necklace, "Four-Hands"?
Bring back the necklace and Rahan will forgive you!
Greek!
This time, Rahan was not dreaming!
He recognized the chimpanzee from the day before.

Page Six.

With a mocking chuckle, the monkey disappeared again.
But Rahan had regained hope.
The "Four-Hands" will perhaps lead Rahan to the collar!?

Several times, the chimpanzee reappeared, bursting out of the foliage, only to disappear again immediately.
Or is it a game, or is it a trap!?

If it is a game, Rahan does not like this game!
If it is a trap, Rahan must be so wary!

The monkey did not reappear.
But a pond shimmered in the distance.
Huts were huddled together on the bank.
It would be surprising if a "Four-Hands" lived so close to "Those-Who-Walk-Upright"

But Rahan has no choice!
He must question these hunters.
But what will they teach him?

Page Seven.

How will Rahan find this "Four-Hands"?
How?
Rahan, helpless, came into view of a large pond.
Men were running toward him.

Rahan, son of Crao, Greets his brothers from the great pond!
Have you not caught a glimpse of a "Four-Hands" fleeing with a necklace of claws?

The necklace with five claws.
Hanging around Freuk the leader's neck!
Would you speak of this necklace, Fire-Hair?

I will give you back that necklace, Rahan!
But on condition that you prove yourself more agile than me!
Rahan considered it useless for the moment to resist this vain leader.

A little later.
The one who takes the least time to get to the other side will keep the necklace!
The mouth of the pond was teeming with crocodiles.

Page Eight.

The test must have been given to the clan leader, because he climbed up onto the swaying trunk without hesitation!
You can start counting, Hakaha!

The sorcerer slowly began to count his fingers.
Freuk-the-chief sometimes swayed, but regained his balance.

Freuk-the-agile has traversed in six times the fingers of both hands!
It is your turn, fire-hair!
He finally reached the other bank.

Rahan is not used to risking himself on moving branches!
He will fall in the middle of the "Leather-Skins"!

Rahan hated to risk his life uselessly, stupidly.
But the hunters' attitude told him that he could not escape this "Test"!
Come on, Rahan!
It's your turn!
Are you afraid?

Page Nine.

Oh!
Rahan could imitate the water carriers of the cursed gorge!
A memory from the past came back to him, which he would, as always, adapt to the new situation.

The ivory knife quickly stripped the leaves from the long bamboo.
So, hair-of-fire, are you a coward!
No Freuk! Rahan is coming!

A moment later, Rahan ventured onto the unstable log.

Hakaha-the-sorcerer, impassive, counted.
Oh!

Ten times the son of Crao almost lost his balance.
Ten times the bamboo pole helped him regain it.

And he reached the other bank.
Five times both hands!
Rahan was faster than Freuk!
He won!
A shout greeted the exploit of the son of Crao.

Page Ten.

No! With this bamboo, Rahan cheated!
I, Freuk, leader of this clan, demand that Rahan confront "Toya" on the trunk of justice!

The chief's bad faith raised a reproachful murmur.
Rahan may, sometimes, risk his life.
But he does not want to steal another hunter's!

Who said anything about a hunter!?
Ha-ha-ha!
Here is "Toya", my faithful "Four-hands"!
Emerging from the chief's hut, Rahan recognized the chimpanzee who had stolen his necklace!

The monkey, baton in hand, launched himself at the trunk of justice with extraordinary agility.
No one has ever triumphed over "Toya"!

If you refuse the fight, your necklace will be thrown to the "Skins-of-Leather"!
Rahan has no chance against a "Four-Hander", Freuk!
You know that!

Page Eleven.

Some men were bending their bows.
If you refuse to face "Toya", the men will kill you!
On the other hand, if you make "Toya" back down, you will be free!

Rahan had no choice.
He had to accept this perilous fight.
At the first false step, Rahan is lost!
The "Skins-of-Leather" will tear his body to pieces!

The monkey, as comfortable as on firm ground, was moving about on the dangerously swaying trunk.
Back off! Rahan and you can both win! Oh!

Back “Toya”, Back!
Greek! Zlang!
Argh!
The monkey hit him so hard that Rahan, unbalanced, slipped into the void!

Page Twelve.

But he barely held on to the trunk!
And the jolt surprised "Toya" who fell in turn!

These horrible saurians were already fighting over the body of "Toya"!
Rahan did not want you dead, 'Four-Hands'.
No, Rahan did not want that!

Rahan is a demon!
He must disappear with his necklace!

Freuk-the-Chief, mad with rage, had just thrown the necklace of claws into the lake!
Ra-ha-ha!

Rahan saw his precious necklace disappear.
He only hesitated for a second. And he caught it before it hit the bottom!

Rahan must be going crazy to throw himself into the middle of the "Skins-of-Leather"!

Page thirteen.

Insane.
That was what the hunters thought!
No, Freuk!
He is neither a madman nor a demon!
He is a daring hunter!

If by misfortune he reappears, the tip of this spear will find its way to his heart!
Ah!
There he is!

Rahan understood why he had been given a reprieve.
The "Leather-skins", twenty strokes away, were still fighting over the remains of "Toya"!

Hum.
This time they spotted Rahan!
A few saurians had just seen him and were gliding in his wake.

Ha-ha-ha!
You are caught between two fires, Rahan!
You have already been disloyal to that hunter, Freuk!
You will not be disloyal a second time!
Page Fourteen.

When Rahan, beating the crocodiles in speed, pulled himself up onto the bank, a strange silence weighed there.

Rahan did not want this fight with "Toya", brothers!
Rahan does not like fights with the "Four-Hands", nor with "Those-Who-Walk-Upright"!

But he finds that Freuk-the-chief has not been very loyal to him!
Freuk will never be disloyal to anyone again!

Hakaha-the-sorcerer pointed to the hunters who were moving away.
The one they were carrying away had two arrows in his chest!

Freuk!?
But, but why?

Rahan's throat tightened.
He found the justice of this clan too quick and too harsh.
But he could do nothing more.
The son of Crao could only feel the claws of his collar, as if to make sure that he had really come out of the nightmare.
