Colorado Springs, CO - Colorado Springs police have released body camera footage of officers shooting and killing an armed suspect while responding to a family disturbance in a central Colorado Springs neighborhood on Feb. 15.

Just before 5 p.m., the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to the disturbance in the 3100 block of Illinois Avenue after a family member called 911.

According to the reporting party, her son was in an argument with another family member while holding a rifle in his hand.

"I need him out of this house before some damage is done," the reporting party said during the initial 911 call. "He's got a gun, he won't let go of it. I need him out."

Before police got to the home, the reporting party and another individual were able to get out, but another remained inside with the suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Derrick Wardle.

Additionally, the reporting party advised law enforcement Wardle was likely to shoot at officers.

"And see now he's talking about shooting the cops. Oh my god," the reporting party is heard saying in the same 911 call.

As soon as police arrived, Wardle opened the door to the house, making contact with officers.

In the bodycam footage police released, officers are heard asking him to "step out" to which Wardle replies a simple "no."

After he didn't comply with multiple commands to exit the residence, police say they observed a firearm and ordered him to drop the gun.

Instead of dropping the weapon, Wardle allegedly raised it toward officers. In response, two officers fired "at least one shot," striking Wardle.

In the video, Wardle is seen holding a rifle and falling to the ground after several shots are heard. As soon as he falls, the video shows officers rushing inside.

According to the department, Wardle was taken into custody after he was struck and officers began rendering medical aid. Despite efforts by law enforcement and responding paramedics, Wardle was declared dead at the scene.

After the incident, officers recovered a loaded rifle from the scene.
