Seek the God of the Ministry, Not Ministry Methods

In modern times, many preachers find themselves searching for the best strategies to grow their churches, increase attendance, and improve their leadership skills. Pastor’s schools, ministry refresher courses, and church growth clinics promise to equip men with the tools they need to build “successful” ministries. While there is certainly value in learning from seasoned pastors and sharpening our skills, far too many preachers are more focused on finding the right methods rather than knowing the One who called them.
The greatest need in ministry today is not a better strategy, but a closer relationship with God. It is not new ideas that will transform churches, but the power of God working through yielded men. A preacher of seventy years once gave this simple yet profound advice to those entering the ministry: “Don’t lean on seminary. Concentrate on just two things: 1. Know your Bible. 2. Pray a lot!” That is the key to effective ministry. Without these, all the best strategies in the world will be powerless.
