Ontario premier Doug Ford said he would impose a 25 per cent surcharge on electricity that the province sends to 1.5 million Americans in several U.S. states by early next week, amid Donald Trump's trade war with Canada.

On Thursday, he told reporters the measure would take effect regardless of whether or not the U.S. president decides to delay tariffs by a month again.

"You touch a stove once you get burned, you don't touch that stove again...We have to follow through until he drops tariffs completely," he said.

Ford called on Trump to "cut to the chase" and work out a new Canada-US-Mexico-Agreement (CUSMA) deal.

Earlier this week, Ford also threatened to cut off power altogether if U.S. tariffs remain in place into April, when Trump said he would introduce reciprocal tariffs.
