This is Challenge the Chief!

Produced by Ideal in 1973, Challenge the Chief is a balanced game of skill great for kids ages six and up. Challenge the Chief features a large sculpture of a native American holding a tomahawk in each hand. Players take turns stacking marbles on the Chief’s tomahawks hoping not to throw him off balance. If a player is too greedy and throws the Chief’s tomahawks off balance, they must collect all of the marbles that the Chief drops and add them to their collection. The player who gets rid of all of their marbles first wins!

This game is genius in its simplicity, yet requires a great amount of skill to win. The sculpt of the Chief is beautiful and looks very similar to the traditional carved wood folk art that can be found throughout the midwestern United States. I’m truly surprised that Challenge the Chief, or at least the balancing mechanic it employs, didn’t become more popular. Oh well, it was still a blast to play!
