OP2502-28-7

Operations staff for Chernarus 3rd Separate Tank Brigade received word the previous evening that separatist forces had entered into the village of Spornoye, and it had deployed some forces in an apparent attempt to take over this grain processing center.

3rd Battalion operations staff ordered the assembly of a task force and dispatched it to Spornoye with orders to attack and clear the village of all separatist forces. Included in those orders were instructions to locate and eliminate the two civilian criminal command operatives who are in charge of the enemy operation, and to seize all documents and any electronic signaling devices they may have on their persons.

Additionally, intelligence staff for 3rd Brigade were notified that friendly local agents had stolen a trove of separatist operational documents from the commanders and they had stashed them inside a residence somewhere in town. The task force commander was tasked with locating and seizing those documents as well.

The tactical plan for the attack on Spornoye was for the T-72 tanks to approach The Village from the south and to look for and eliminate any enemy heavy vehicles. 2nd BMP Squad was ordered to enter town from the south to the east side of the village, while Command Squad was ordered to attack the grain processing center. There, the two civilian criminal command operatives were holed up along with a small compliment of local militia.

2nd Squad entered The village first and was immediately attacked by Spanish and Serbian regulars, engaging them in a very intense firefight. Throughout this firefight 2nd Squad lost eight effectives, including it's BMP, but managed to hold its position with support coming from Tank 3.

Command Squad assaulted the grain processing center and swept through the western side of it, eliminating local militias, and then swept to the east to locate and eliminate the two civilian criminal command operatives. Commander seized documents and a cell phone from both.

The enemy occupying the village counterattacked Command Squad, enemies which included Serbian and Spanish regulars. Command Squad swept to the Northeast and encountered several more enemy infantry, eliminating them and a supporting T-55 tank.

Commander committed his reinforcing element consisting of four T-55 tanks and four small rifle squads. Reinforcing Tank 1 and Reinforcing Tank 2 moved about 300 m south of the position of 2nd Squad, which was holding its own against enemy infantry. The two rifle squads attempted to make contact and join up with 2nd Squad but they themselves were caught in an ambush, and wiped out to a man. 2nd Squad also was wiped out.

Armor battle

Throughout the infantry firefights which took place in Spornoye, a tank gunfight took place to the northwest of the village. Task Force commander was extremely busy in these operations, and ultimately was not a witness to the tank gun fight.

As best task force commander could assemble, Tank 1 and Tank 2 were deployed on the northwest corner of the village, and encountered several medium and heavy tracked armor vehicles, including one T-34 tank, two T-55 tanks, two BMPs, and one T-62 tank. Apparently, Tank 1 and Tank 2 effectively stopped further armor encroachments into Spornoye until they encountered the enemy T-62. Both tanks had fired on and effectively destroyed the T-62, as the T62 and one of the T-55s had returned fire and destroyed both Tank 1 and Tank 2.

In addition, enemy armor fired on and destroyed one of the BRDM scout cars and one of the reinforcing T-55 tanks.

Final tally

Third Battalion operations staff had deemed the operation a success, and ordered the task force to withdraw back to base.

Casualties were catastrophic. Tank 1 T-72 and Tank 2 T-72, Reinforcing Tank 3, along with Scout 1, were all destroyed in the armor firefight. Reinforcing Rifle Squad 1 and Reinforcing Rifle Squad 2, along with 2nd Squad were wiped out. One BMP was destroyed.

Reinforcing Tank 2 was damaged. Command Squad lost two.

Field counts of enemy losses included four UAVs, three technicals, three T-55 tanks, two BMPs, one BRDM, one T-62 tank, and one T-34 tank.

The enemy counterattack, though it was costly to friendly forces, failed to retake the village. Documents seized from the civilian criminal command operatives indicated that the separatists regarded Spornoye as a critically important asset for them, so much so that separatist commanders decided to bypass more obvious and potentially more profitable operations in other villages.

Brigade intelligence staff determined that the separatists, despite the heavy losses they also suffered, would continue with combat operations in northwestern Chernarus for the foreseeable future.
