Gameplay Part 1

The game is set in the year 2183 CE, 35 years after humans discovered the ruins of an ancient spacefaring race called the Protheans on Mars. With the technology from these ruins, humanity learned the secrets of mass effect physics and element zero, unlocking faster-than-light travel. Humans also discovered the mass relay network that threaded the galaxy, permitting instantaneous passage across thousands of light-years. Humanity began its journey among the stars, encountering various alien races and establishing itself on the galactic stage.

Prologue:

On The Normandy: Commander John Shepard begins their mission aboard the SSV Normandy, receiving orders from Captain Anderson and Ambassador Udina. Nihlus, a Spectre agent, evaluates Shepard for potential Spectre candidacy while briefing them on a mission to Eden Prime.

Find The Beacon: Shepard, Kaidan, and Jenkins land on Eden Prime, encountering Geth forces and husks. Jenkins is killed early in the mission. The team rescues Ashley Williams before discovering the Prothean Beacon, which unexpectedly pulls Shepard in, causing them to experience disturbing visions of destruction.

The Citadel:

Expose Saren: Shepard arrives at the Citadel to present evidence against Saren, but the Council dismisses the claims. With Udina and Anderson’s help, Shepard seeks proof to expose Saren’s involvement with the Geth.

Garrus: Shepard tracks down Garrus Vakarian, a C-Sec officer investigating Saren, at Dr. Michel’s clinic. After dealing with thugs sent to intimidate the doctor, Garrus joins the squad to take down Saren.

Wrex: Shepard encounters Urdnot Wrex, a Krogan bounty hunter hired to kill Fist, a criminal working with Saren. After a brief discussion at Chora’s Den, Wrex agrees to team up with Shepard.

Expose Saren II: With new evidence obtained from Tali, Shepard returns to the Council and successfully proves Saren’s betrayal. The Council revokes Saren’s Spectre status and appoints Shepard as the first human Spectre, granting them the authority to hunt him down.
