OP2502-28-6

Intelligence staff for Chernarus 4th Separate Light Mountain Rifle Brigade, accumulating data from a variety of sources, including reports from friendly agents, aerial drone overflights, and electronic intercepts, determined that separatist forces were planning to attack and take over the village of Novi Sobor in western Chernarus.

Novi Sobor sits on the extreme northeastern extent of the zone of control of 1st Battalion, 4th Separate Light Mountain Rifle Brigade. Taking over the village for the separatists could conceivably mean the start of a massive buildup of separatist military power. Brigade operations staff ordered a task force to be assembled, to march on Novi Sobor.

The tactical plan for the defense of Novi Sobor was for Command Squad, 2nd Squad, and 4th Squad to deploy in Novi Sobor on a convex arc facing north, with 2nd Squad in the east and 4th Squad in the west, and Command Squad at the center edge of the village. 3rd Squad was to be kept in a tactical reserve position.

On approach to the village, two technicals were spotted south of the village, preventing our forces from entering. Commander ordered artillery strikes on both vehicles, destroying them both.

Once in town, the task force defended against attacks primarily from the north and northwest. Commander ordered an artillery fire strike on a group of Chechens who were closing in, destroying them. During this time, 4th Squad was hit heavily by both vehicles and experienced infantry. 4th Squad lost massive amounts of casualties, forcing them to retreat from their position. During this and one other firefight, commander ordered reinforcements to approach the village, three mechanized cavalry units consisting of three T-55 tanks and three small rifle squads.

When the tanks approached the village they discovered that enemy forces had attempted to surround the task force from the south, ultimately forcing the tanks to fight in two directions as they delivered the infantry reinforcements. In the meantime, Command Squad shifted from its position to the west to fill the gap left by the retreat of 4th Squad.

A Wagner Group operator squad attacked Command Squad, but when a reinforced 4th Squad appeared, the enemy rifle group was forced back.

The enemy began to attack the village with armor, by commander's estimation, no fewer than a tank company. These attacks caused some damage to our riflemen, but they held despite mounting casualties.

Brigade operations staff deemed the operation a success, and ordered the task force to withdraw. Under brigade standard operational procedures, reconnaissance forces leave first then the infantry, then the tanks. The enemy armor attack forced commander to select a rally point two km to the south in the village of Mogilievka.

The remnants of the task force withdrew successfully and in good order.

Casualties were heavy. 4th Squad was wiped out, 2nd Squad lost three, 3rd Squad lost four. Command Squad lost two. Two of the three T-55s committed as reinforcements were destroyed by enemy tank gunfire.

Field counts of enemy losses included six technicals, three T-55 tanks, two BMPs, one BRDM Scout car, and one UAV.

Operation staff said that despite the town being overrun by enemy armor, the defense of Novi Sobor was ultimately a success with the task force inflicting heavy damage on enemy Infantry.

The reconfiguration of reinforcing forces by 4th Brigade operations staff, by using mechanized cavalry units to act as a fire brigade was a game changer. The enemy attacked with a large amount of heavy tracked armor but those attacks were tempered by the presence of the newly configured reinforcing forces.
