Apr. 28, 1965 - President Johnson sent 400 U.S. Marines into the revolt-shattered Dominican Republic tonight after 1,172 American evacuees were terrorized in a complete breakdown of law and order.
Although these U.S. citizens were safely removed from the embattled island, some 2,000 other Americans remained in grave danger.
In a speech delivered over nationwide radio and television, Johnson said his move was supported by Democratic and Republican congressional leaders alike.
