Israel cuts off Gaza aid, pressures Hamas to accept new ceasefire proposal

Israel blocked the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza on Sunday and warned of “additional consequences” if Hamas doesn’t accept a new proposal to extend a fragile ceasefire.

The first phase of the ceasefire, which included a surge in humanitarian assistance, expired on Saturday. The two sides have yet to negotiate the second phase, which would see Hamas release dozens of remaining hostages in return for Israeli troops pulling out of the besieged enclave.

Israel said Sunday that the new proposal calls for extending the first phase of the ceasefire through the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, and the Jewish Passover holiday.

Many in Gaza were angered by Israel’s move and expressed concern about a drop in aid during Ramadan.
